Testfreaks, a Swedish based product reviewing site has slowly been gathering attention. It caught our eye from ArcticIndex. Testfreaks can be summed up to be the aggregator of review sites. It pulls in material from more than 4000 sources from 27 markets and aggregates those into one rank – Freak Score.
Testfreaks has been put together by the founders of Pricerunner.com, Kristofer Arwin, Magnus Wiberg and Martin Alexanderson. The founders have therefore plenty of experience from the online shopping market, which Testfreaks is in also. Their business model is to get small commissions from sales done through their links. This sort of model understandably needs traffic. Last October they had about 2 million visits a month, and according to Anton they currently roll around 4M visits a month. Testfreaks has also received a $3 million investment from Northzone last year, according to VentureBeat.
There is plenty of competition in the social shopping market at the moment. In TestFreak’s case however, they mainly work with many of the other shopping sites to bring value for everyone. According to Anton Kuhta, who we had a little chat about the TestFreak site, they usually partner with at least one shopping site on each market to give their users the best possible price. They also work with other review sites – this is because TestFreaks brings in a lot of traffic to these sites so many want to work with them.
Perhaps companies that fall close by with TestFreaks at least from Finland are RunToShop and Fruugo. Both are some sort of aggregators and have similar kind of business models. It will be interesting to see how these companies will perform in the long run as social shopping is still an area that has yet proven itself. There’s definitely a need for more collaboration among these companies world wide – there are untapped benefits for sure.

The review of Firefox 4.0

They’re only mockups, but they show the direction that Web browsers are headed, and it’s definitely a case of less being more.
Mozilla has posted to its wiki early concept designs for Firefox 4.0, and they show a Web browser doing its best to get out of the way of the pages it displays. The interface is decidedly minimal, giving more room for what really matters: content.In the first of several mockups of the Windows version of Firefox 4.0, the browser page tabs are in the usual place, atop the page viewer, but other buttons have been absorbed, with only the most important left on the interface.
In the second, the tabs are placed over the address bar, similar to the layout found in Chrome and the last beta of Safari 4. (In the final version of Safari 4, Apple returned to the more traditional tab location.)
In fact, users of Chrome and Safari will recognize a lot of design elements from those browsers,such as placing the refresh and stop-loading buttons in the address bar. But who knows how the final version will ultimately turn out? These are, after all, just mockups, posted for discussion.
Still, the overall trend is toward a minimalistic interface. And Stephen Shankland, writing in CNet’s Webware blog, appreciates that browser developers are giving him more Web-page real estate:
Mozilla’s ultimate goal is to make the user interface step into the background as much as possible — indeed, the mobile-phone version of Firefox now under development has no visible user interface until it’s needed. “Every time a user has to think about how to do something, instead of what (he wants) to do, we as software creators have failed,” said Aza Raskin, Mozilla’s leader of user interface work.
But it’s not simple to redesign the browsers. Users can be confused when interfaces change, some controls are essential, and hiding them can cause problems.
“The challenge to reducing UI (user interface) is in recognition versus recall. People generally use what they see,” Raskin said. “How can we provide one-click access to everything possible on the Web without also cluttering the screen? That’s a question we are still answering.”
I like these changes, but I also like the convenience of having buttons I use frequently at the ready — which is one reason why I really like the Ribbon interface on the newer versions of Microsoft Office.
Hopefully, Firefox’s interface will remain highly customizable in future versions, so individual users can have it their way.

Is Twitter a Google Killer?

Warning: today's column is strictly editorial, so those of you looking for actionable tips might want to check back in next week.
I have been reading a lot about the impending demise of Google for months, even years now. Most recently, it's Twitter search that's expected to push into Google's marketshare.
I pay attention to these things, and because of my involvement in the industry, I guess I'm probably an early adopter (earlier than the typical person). But, because of my years in the SEO Industry, I'm also not one to have knee-jerk reactions when it comes to strategy. I have to be considerate of the long term, while not ignoring the short term.
Let me back up first and provide a little personal history.
My initial involvement in the Interactive industry came when I started working at Lycos, back in early 2000. At that time, Lycos was a pretty big player in search, with both lycos.com and hotbot.com. There was much discussion at the time as to who would be the remaining "Big 3" that would eventually win the search wars. Mind you, the search engines that were considered at that time were Lycos, AOL, MSN, Yahoo, AltaVista, and Excite.
Search back then was the wild frontier. Search was spam-riddled. Keyword stuffing was the norm in search engine optimization. Users would need to click through many pages of search results to try and find exactly what it was that they were looking for. Then, along came a little company called Google. Google had figured out how to deliver much higher quality search results, and delivered them in a very clean interface.
As time has passed, Google has gotten even better at addressing any "spam" issues, and the results have continued to get better and better. Still, though, the methodology of search engine optimization was that you needed to get a page indexed, get links to it, and let it sit for a while, until the search engines would begin to index the page and rank it.
No more.
Google addressed this, too.
Today's Google results are a blend of web results, press release/news results, video results, local results and blog results. I even recently added a Google profile. Instantly, there I was in the search results for people searching "Mark Jackson" on Google. Often, my Search Engine Watch column or blog posts on my company's blog will show in Google's Blog results within the hour for people searching "search engine optimization" on Google.
With our A.D.D. society, a one-hour wait for "fresh" search results doesn't seem to be good enough. No, people want better than that. They want "instant" search. In fact, they want others to do the searching for them. So, they use Twitter search.
A lot of people seem to be jumping on this bandwagon. Now, I am saying this here...I retain the right to change my mind on this, but this is how I'm currently seeing things.
People are trusting Twitter search, and their Twitter friend's opinions (and the blog posts that they link to) more than they are trusting Google's algorithm? What's easier to spam?
I do have some friends that I trust (people that I actually KNOW, not just people that follow me on Twitter or that I happen to follow). And, I do value their opinions. And, I would trust their opinions more than conducting blind searches on Google. So, I think that what is going on with Twitter search is the beginning of something, but there are just too many "bugs" to get worked out for this to be a Google killer, at least in the short term.
There is talk that in the future, to gain "authority" in Twitter and hence "optimize" the search results, you will need to have a lot of followers, post often, and get ReTweeted. Check out this topic on WebmasterWorld. If Twitter Search begins crawling links in your tweets, and assigning reputation points to users, with some new-fashioned SEO, your Tweets will begin ranking highly in Twitter search for your keywords.
You wanna know what else? There are ways to automate a lot of this process. Or, you could do like Guy Kawasaki (and many others) and hire people to post Tweets for you.
So, even though you might trust Guy Kawasaki's opinions, are you really hearing directly from him? Or, someone working for him?
Matt Cutts and his team deserve a lot of credit for what they've been able to accomplish at Google with cleaning up spam. Right now, Twitter Search is just too easy to manipulate. One thing that my years in the SEO industry have taught me is that users want spam-free results, and the good search engines are the ones who find ways to counter those trying to manipulate the results. The easier a search engine is to manipulate, the less likely it is to deliver quality results.
Once someone develops a method of bringing aspects of social into web results that are not easily manipulated, you might then have the tool that delivers quality, fresh results.

Fresno Pacific offers new global MBA

Its new global MBA from Fresno Pacific University is designed to prepare Valley professionals for success in the world economy, the university says.
“The traditional MBA is just the functions of an organization—marketing, accounting, etc.—you assume it’s a domestic organization,” says Dennis Langhofer, director of the program. “We assume we are working ... to prepare people here (in the Central Valley) to work in a global environment.”
The degree’s international component comes through in the faculty, curriculum and foundation. Mr. Langhofer, who is also the interim dean of the School of Business, has run his own business and studied and taught leadership.
Justin Dermon, who teaches finance, is a Fresno native who moved to France at age 12 when his parents (his father is French) became missionaries there.
“You just can’t be in your own little place and ignore what’s going on around you,” says Mr. Dermon.
They are joined by Peng Wen, a native of Taiwan who has been teaching economics at the university since 1990. He is also a member of the economic advisory council to the Taiwanese government.
Another feature of the global MBA is that students will see the world they’re learning about. A two-week international trip, perhaps China or France, is included in the tuition. Study in those nations is expected to give participants experience with international business perspectives, the chance to apply critical analysis and practice in leadership and teamwork skills.
Classes will meet one night a week, and there will be an online component, as well. The 41-unit program will take 16 months and the first group of students is scheduled to begin studies in August at FPU’s North Fresno Center.
The need for the global MBA is real. FPU’s research in the Stockton to Bakersfield and Central Coast regions suggest demand for graduate-level education will increase hand-in-hand with the need for people in management-level positions.
Candidates for the program may be traditional B.A. graduates or working professionals who have completed their bachelor’s degree. The goal is to prepare them to be entry- or middle-level managers, or to operate their own businesses.
Fresno Pacific University offers undergraduate and graduate programs to about 2,400 traditional and adult students on its 42-acre main campus in southeast Fresno or centers in North Fresno, Visalia and Bakersfield. The university also reaches 14,000 students across the nation and around the world through professional development studies programs.

Google’s Black-Box Social Network

Google wants to conquer the social networking world without creating an explicit social network.
Rather than trying to revive its Orkut networking site, which has been a flop outside of Brazil, Google is weaving the various components of social networks through its existing services. Your contacts in Gmail and Google Talk, for example, are being turned into a list of “friends” with whom you can share photos from Picasa or blog posts from Blogger.
Another piece of Google’s decentralized social network is an option that lets people create a profile page with photos and the usual tidbits about where you went to school and so on.
On Tuesday, Google began a campaign to get people to create these profiles, using its biggest gun: the Google search engine. If you want to control what people see when they search for your name, create a profile and click the box to have it included in Google search results.
While some people may well want to do anything they can to hide from the prying eyes of surfers around the world, many more in this narcissistic era will want to ascend to the stage Google is offering them.
There are good write-ups of the nuances of this feature from Danny Sullivan, of Search Engine Land, and John Battelle, the author and ad-network entrepreneur.
Are the new profile pages enough to get Google’s ersatz social network to rival Facebook and MySpace? I don’t know. But it doesn’t hurt.
As much Google’s strategy makes a lot of business sense, I think it has some real problems for users. Social networks are not just software with features they are –really—communities. What you do on MySpace, Twitter and Facebook are different because each has different rules about who can see what about you and different norms that have evolved for what is acceptable behavior.
Facebook, for all its missteps, has really defined a high standard of control for users. It’s easy to change which group of people sees what information about you. And you can see how this plays out. Google lets you have a little control over who sees your phone number and other contact information. Otherwise, everything in the profile is public.
More troublesome to me is that the rules and norms of all of Google’s features are hard to figure out. That is in keeping with the company’s style. It evolves products over time, and tends to offer limited options hoping that default settings work for most people.
That may be the best way to make a search engine, map site and maybe even an e-mail service. But I don’t think it’s the best way to create services where people share sometimes very intimate details about themselves.
For me, I don’t really want strangers to see pictures of my kids. But I love to show pictures of my kids to my friends. Maybe Google lets me do this, but the interface is too hard for me to figure out. I also find Google’s version of the social graph Google Friend Connect inscrutable.
I think Google has a huge set of advantages in becoming a hub of social communications and media sharing, with YouTube, Blogger, Gmail and of course its search engine. But the company and its users may well be served by bringing all these features into a more coherent interface around which user expectations can be built.
When it comes to your personal thoughts, contact information and your photos — be they of your kids or your bachelor party — saying trust the black box just isn’t good enough.

Twittering, rapid media may confuse morals

LOS ANGELES, April 14 (UPI) -- A U.S. researcher raises questions about the emotional cost of the heavy reliance on a rapid stream of news snippets from TV, online or Twitter.

First author Mary Helen Immordino-Yang of the University of Southern California said that humans can sort information very quickly and can respond in fractions of seconds to signs of physical pain in others. However, admiration and compassion -- two of the social emotions that define humanity -- take much longer.

The researchers used compelling, real-life stories to induce admiration for virtue or skill, or compassion for physical or social pain, in 13 volunteers -- the emotion felt was verified through a careful protocol of pre- and post-imaging interviews.

Brain imaging showed that the volunteers needed 6 to 8 seconds to fully respond to stories of virtue or social pain. However, once awakened, the responses lasted far longer than the volunteers' reactions to stories focused on physical pain.

Normal life events will always provide opportunities for humans to feel admiration and compassion, but fast-paced digital media tools may direct some heavy users away from traditional avenues for learning about humanity, such as engagement with literature or face-to-face social interactions, Immordino-Yang said.

Immordino-Yang did not blame digital media.

"It's not about what tools you have, it's about how you use those tools," she said in a statement.

The study is scheduled to appear in next week's Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences online early edition.

Twitter Worm: A Closer Look at What Happened

It looks like Twitter's website has been scrubbed clean after several bouts of the "Mikeyy" or "StalkDaily" worm plagued the service. Even though the threat seems to have passed, questions remain about just how serious this attack was and if there will be any repercussions for the worm's creator.

Worm Attacks Bird

Early on Saturday, April 11, the Mikeyy worm started to spread via Twitter posts by encouraging you to click on a link to a rival microblogging service StalkDaily.com. As soon as you clicked on the link your account would be infected and begin to send out similar messages encouraging your followers to visit StalkDaily. Then your followers would become infected and the worm's infection rate would grow. You could also catch the worm by viewing infected profiles on Twitter.com.

Twitter fell victim to about four different Mikeyy worm attacks, but now seems to be worm-free, according to the BBC. The security firm F-Secure tracked one particularly crafty version of the worm: users would receive a message telling them how to remove Mikeyy and would be encouraged to click on a URL shortened using the bit.ly service. The bit.ly address would then redirect users to a Twitter profile named "reberbrerber," where users would be automatically infected. Since this variant of the worm used bit.ly to redirect traffic, F-Secure was able to track the worm. According to the company, the bit.ly variant of the worm mostly affected users in the United States and was clicked on well over 18,000 times.

Mikeyy was authored by Michael Mooney, the 17-year-old creator of StalkDaily.

Attack flirted with distaster

By malware standards the Mikeyy worm was relatively benign since it only directed users to a rival site. However, F-Secure's chief research officer, Mikko H. Hypponen, told the BBC the attack could have been much worse. Hypponen says it would have been a simple trick for malware authors to modify the worm to infect a user's computer, where more serious offenses like identity theft could have occurred.

Even more worrying is the fact that this worm used a well-known exploit and has infected other social networks in the past. According to Twitter's blog, Mikeyy was similar to the Samy worm that infected MySpace in 2007.

Aftermath

While it seems that Twitter has stomped out the Mikeyy worm, it is unclear whether Twitter is still vulnerable to this kind of attack. Twitter says it is conducting "a full review of the weekend activities," and that "everything from how it happened, how [it] reacted, and preventative measures will be covered." However, Twitter has yet to say whether this type of attack can happen again or why such a common exploit was left vulnerable in the first place?

The fate of Mooney, however, seems a little less ambiguous. Referring to the 2007 Samy worm, Twitter notes that "MySpace filed a lawsuit against the virus creator which resulted in a felony charge and sentencing." Twitter then goes on to say that it "takes security very seriously" and "will be following up on all fronts." So much for Mikeyy and perhaps even Mikey.

All “New” Web2.0 Business Models are Advertising Supported

On the way to the airport, I was thinking about the Mindshift Web2.0 Panel that I just sat in on, asking myself why it is that the most highly regarded web2.0 companies don’t make any money. The holy grail exit strategy seems to be: get acquired by yahoo or google … but that can’t be the only business model, because you also have the facebook and myspace models, and more recently, sources tell me that digg.com is cash flow positive. But these are all ad-supported and in terms of getting “rich,” which is supposedly the unstated goal of most entrepreneurs, it’s yahoo and google that make dollar signs appear in the eyes of most bootstrapped web2.0 ventures.

Of course, I first questioned my underlying premise – is it true they don’t make money? I did some napkin math on flickr just prior to the yahoo acquisition, and based on assessing a random sample for pro accounts, it appeared to me that flickr was not making enough money to be profitable. I know, I know, the value to yahoo was not in cash flow, it was the value of the network, but let’s think about that for a second. The value of the network was small for flickr, it was large for yahoo, which is what commanded the acquisition multiple. So how does yahoo monetize a network. That’s right … through advertising.

So is it true that all web2.0 business models are advertising supported. That depends which internet camp you are in. Is the internet all about software? Or is the internet all about media distribution? I am in the latter camp … and media distribution has been advertising supported for at least the last century. When you also consider that web2.0 attributes, such as social networks and community aggregation, only make advertising more lucrative by commanding more contextual application and a correspondingly higher CPM, then it makes sense that the web2.0 business model is advertising-based.

But what if the internet is about software development? In the absence of shrink wrapping, I think that software is no longer a product that you can sell for money. It is merely an enabler of user experience that helps people get things done. Increasingly, getting things done is about media consumption and community building. Basecamp aside, people are unwilling to pay for most consumer-facing applications. I wonder if that will ever change.

If you rewind the clock all the way back, ebay and amazon.com are web2.0 companies – they create networks to engender trust between buyers and sellers, they use reputation managers and recommendation engines, and they highlight simplicity in their business models (if not in their user interface). And yet, they don’t make money through advertising. Instead, they make money by taking a little off the top of transactions. Ebay aggregates buyers for sellers and amazon aggregates sellers for buyers, but their revenue is transaction-based. But again, the “user-customer” doesn’t pay for this, the “seller-customer does.”

I know that people scoff at advertising, but isn’t that where the business models need to be centered? Or do the business models even matter as long as yahoo and google are collecting the advertising dollars for us?

Twitter Hit By StalkDaily Worm

According to Techcrunch reports, Twitter suffered from Saturday StalkDaily worm attacking. Once the user visits the site, the computer will be infected and will send a large number of Twitter spam messages, which will lure users to visit other websites called StalkDaily.

It is not clear the specific circumstances of the worm. But as we see, during someone visit to the infected user’s personal Twitter page, other users will also be infected. It is reported that the worm will modify personal Twitter page “About me” section and add a point to a link to the worm.

This attack began at the United States Saturday morning, many of the blog have paid attention to the worm.As we can see through Twitter search, there have been hundreds of articles and news related to the virus in just a few minutes.

Two new tech from engadget

In a recent interview with Elevation Partners' Roger McNamee, the Palm investor explained that Palm knew it had to step up its game after RIM launched the BlackBerry Pearl, which he described as "the first real consumer electronics product in the smartphone category." The Pearl launch served as the coming out party for the BlackBerry brand among consumers as RIM began stepping up its advertising, and the product's narrower hardware design was a noticeable break with the staid stylings of previous BlackBerry devices.

Indeed, back in November of 2006 as Palm rolled out the somewhat consumer-focused Treo 680, I wrote a Switched On column noting that the Pearl broke with the evolutionary path that RIM had been on and served as an example for the kind of hardware shift Palm needed to make.

Palm finally answered the Pearl with the Centro, a compact, inexpensive, and successful smartphone that has apparently served as the final resting place of the original Palm OS architecture. However, between the release of those two devices, the entry and subsequent SDK of Apple's iPhone proved a far more significant turning point in the evolution of consumer smartphones. The iPhone's resonance and popularity have provoked responses from many competitors, but there is a particular contrast in the flagship CDMA touchscreen handsets released by RIM and Palm --- the other two smartphone developers that grow their own operating systems -- since then.
This time it has been Palm, with its back against the wall, that has made the clean break from the past and created an experience that looks modern, clean and elegant. At this point, the Pre appears to sacrifice some discoverability versus the iPhone and Palm has had to accept tradeoffs without as much marketplace power as Apple to drive as deep an SDK or proprietary connectors as Apple has. However, Palm's webOS rewards with a fluidity evident in both the multitasking navigation among applications and the potential for seamless integration of Internet data into its core applications.

In fact, if its capabilities match to the promise extolled in the McNamee interview, the Pre will live up to its name literally by taking -- or at least suggesting -- actions on your behalf in anticipation of your needs. The venture capitalist gives as an example that the phone might offer to email people you have a meeting with when it detects that you are running late. This level of active assistance would leverage the power of inputs such as GPS and the Internet that were not broadly available at the advent of the Newton, the first digital handheld that sought to take a more active role in managing your life. Since then, most PDAs and smartphones -- and even the iPhone -- have been more passive pocket computers. The imperfect information often provided by these inputs may make this more of a novelty for the near-term, but Palm is certainly ceding nothing on the ambition front.

In contrast, while the Storm has certainly done the iPhone one better in many respects, with a higher-resolution autofocus camera that can shoot video, microSD, Bluetooth stereo, integration with turn-by-turn directions and unlimited music (if you take advantage of those services), and of course, excellent mobile e-mail capabilities for those who have a BlackBerry server. But by keeping the basic popup menu-driven operation of previous BlackBerry products intact, the overall user experience is fractured between the worlds of swiping and typing.

The Storm may have strong appeal to those accustomed to the BlackBerry experience and who want a larger touchscreen. But RIM, like Microsoft, now needs to make more significant changes in this new competitive landscape that includes the approachable finger-driven experience with which Apple broke ground and the richness of knowledge that Palm is pouring into a foundation. It's great to have a Pearl, but when taking advantage of a gestalt that marries new interfaces to the new Internet, the world is your oyster.

How to Decide If You Should Become an Entrepreneur

This is a guest post from Tim Clark, who writes about money and meaning at Soul Shelter.

In response to October’s quiz about entrepreneurial “types”, a reader named Pace posed some intriguing questions:

What are the characteristics of successful entrepreneurs?
Are they demographically different from unsuccessful entrepreneurs?
Or is it all due to individual differences?

At the heart of Pace’s inquiry, I think, is something many people long to know: How can I decide whether I should become an entrepreneur?

Here’s the first part of my two-step response, and one I sincerely believe: If you’re seriously thinking of starting your own business, then you have what it takes to start your own business. We’ve seen that “personality” and other personal attributes are poor predictors of entrepreneurial inclination, let alone success.

But at the same time, we need to move beyond simplistic “you can do it!” exhortations and faith in sheer willpower.

So here’s the second part of my answer, in the form of three questions that will help you drill down to the hard realities of whether you should start a business.

What industry are you targeting?
The choice of sector in which you start your company could be the single most important factor in your success. Most entrepreneurs — and remember, we define “entrepreneur” as anyone who starts a business, including one-person, home-based sole proprietorships — start their ventures in mature, low-growth, highly competitive sectors. And that’s why so many entrepreneurs (again, we’re talking about the entire population of self-employed people) fail, or earn less than they would as employees.

Those who launched software companies between 1982 and 2002, for example, were 608 times more likely to have their startups join the Inc. 500 than those who launched restaurants, according to Scott Shane, a professor of entrepreneurial studies at Case Western University.

Deliberately choosing a higher-growth sector, such as healthcare or education, is a smart first move (see J.D.’s discussion of recession-proof jobs, which touches on high-potential industries ).

What is your work experience?
Most entrepreneurs, naturally enough, start businesses in sectors where they already work. So here’s the first takeaway: if you currently work in a mature, low-growth, highly competitive sector, becoming an entrepreneur in that sector will predispose you toward failure. If you work in the restaurant industry, for example, you should not become an entrepreneur — unless you are extremely talented and savvy about both your niche and the industry as a whole.

What should you do if you’re in the above situation but still committed to starting your own business? Consider switching industries first. But start by getting a job in the new sector, rather than launching a new venture in unfamiliar territory.

Will you focus on businesses or consumers?
Many new entrepreneurs want to target consumers. That’s natural because all of us, as consumers ourselves, have a basic understanding of, and affinity for, many consumer products and services. But most successful new companies focus on selling to other businesses rather than to consumers (they are business-to-business, or “B-to-B”, rather than business-to-consumer, or “B-to-C”, ventures).

Why? Businesses tend to make rational purchase decisions, so if you can demonstrate that your service or product provides cost savings or a quick return on investment, you’ll make sales. Consumers, on the other hand, can be, well, downright irrational in their purchasing habits, at least compared to businesses. Marketing to consumers can be far more difficult, and you must often depend on retailers or distributors to reach them. Unless you or someone on your team have a strong track record of successful consumer marketing, you’re more likely to enjoy success targeting businesses.

So there you have ‘em: three questions to help you decide whether you should become an entrepreneur. Keep in mind that these are simply guidelines, and that some entrepreneurs successfully ignore them. But why not let the facts improve your odds?

iControlPad iPhone add new gaming control to your lovely iphone

The iControlPad project first showed off their joypad accessory intentions back in August, promising a combination case and gaming controller for Apple’s iPhone and iPod touch. Now developer ZodTTD is back with a video of the joypad in action (playing quake4iphone, no less), together with an update on how exactly the project is progressing. Find both after the cut.

The independently-powered controller has a D-pad, four gameplay buttons (A/B/X/Y), together with start and select buttons. There’s also a power LED. Apple have repeatedly called the iPod touch the next generation of portable gaming console, so we wouldn’t be surprised to find developers and users all enthused about the iControlPad.

As well as the hardware, ZodTTD is promising the sourcecode too, so that developers can give their iPhone and iPod touch titles iControlPad compatibility. No word on release dates or pricing (although $30 was originally suggested), but at least it looks like the iControlPad isn’t vaporware.

In the past year, there is a continuing discussion in the Chinese blogosphere on whether blog culture is dying down. Moreover, recently bokee.com and blogchina.com, the two earliest BSPs founded by Fang dong-xing in China, are at business crisis. Fang is looking for investing to transform the websites into multi-media community platform.

What we see is: BSP and services related with blogs are slowly disappearing, blog has passed its golden days and walked into a dark future. The main reason is because the services around blogs cannot make a profit.

Why can’t they make a profit? The content quality of blog is better than SNS, Twitter and Digg, their traffics are high. They should be able to get income from Ads. However, at present, blogger’s income is too narrowed. Basically, they depends on Google AdSense. Which means their profit is affected by Google.

When Google entered the scene, it developed a huge number of blogging tools, such as google reader, feedburner, blogsearch, etc… which destroyed other BSPs dream for profit while google has a monopoly status in the market.

Blog is more open and individualized, its content quality is relative higher. SNS is more closed, especially towards search engine. It contrasts with blog’s openness and affects information dissemination. A good article is very difficult to get disseminated via SNS. Now most of the SNS in China are coping the facebook, which is a dead end. The best SNS is Tencent’s QQ, but you can’t find any similarity between QQ and facebook. The funny thing is Tencent never claimed itself to be a SNS.

The copyright infringement verdict between Qunar and Ctrip

Qunar.com has expressed disappointment over the decision handed down on January 6th by Beijing’s Haidian District People’s Court.

“While Qunar follows the principles and nature of search engines, in this specific case of the partial display and linking back to limited content on Ctrip’s website, Qunar was deemed to have infringed Chinese copyright law,” stated the travel meta-search engine.

“The action brought by Ctrip to try to limit Qunar’s search parameters is seen in the broader context of the growing success of Qunar, which has seen traffic to its site increase seven-fold in the last year. The suit pertains to the crawl, partial display and link to user-generated comments for hotels that reside in full on Ctrip. Visitors to Qunar are taken to the Ctrip site to view the complete user comment.”

The court ruled that Qunar.com should stop its infringement activities, pay damages of RMB 1,000 to Ctrip.com and make an apology lasting for 24 hours on the front page of its website. This decision by the district court will have no material impact on Qunar nor it’s future plans.

“Qunar is considering the judgment and will decide on the appropriate course of action in the best interests of its shareholders, clients and users.”

The story of this event

In April 2008, Ctrip.com found that Qunar.com was copying commented articles from Ctrip.com in its hotel area. Ctrip.com said that it had been encouraging its members to publish comments on hotels and these comments were arranged by Ctrip.com, which cost a lot of time and energy. These comments had become the important reference and standards for members’ booking of hotels and were precious information resources of Ctrip.com.

Google's goal is not just an external sales force. It wants to support partners who will develop value-added services and make cloud computing more appealing for businesses.

"As these resellers move up the value chain and build more solutions, you'll see more opportunities being created," said Paul Slakey, director of enterprise channel sales at Google.

Slakey suggested that Google App Engine might be one way that its partners develop custom business services, but adds that there's no reason other cloud platforms like Amazon Web Services couldn't be used.

Tony Safoian, president of IT firm SADA Systems, said his company has been providing services around Google Apps for about two years. Not only is Google gaining traction among enterprises, he said, but the economic pressure is assisting Google's ascent.

"The state of the economy is accelerating the process," he said. "We feel all organizations will have a significant part of their infrastructure in the cloud. It's just a question of who goes first and when."

Google claims that more than a million businesses are using Google Apps and that more than 3,000 businesses are signing up daily.

Rishi Chandra, senior product manager for Google Apps, acknowledged that while some businesses remain reticent about cloud computing, the issue he's more frequently confronted with is education. "Customers are asking the question now about this new opportunity in the cloud," he said. "We see growing awareness about cloud computing in general."

Murphy is less willing to characterize the cloud as a done deal. As he sees it, mistrust remains. "It's hard to bank on anything in the cloud," he said. "With Google at least it's easy to trust the viability of the company."

Palm Pre: Possibly as low as $149?

Now that everyone has seen Palm’s new phone, the Pre, and wants one, the biggest question remains pricing. Initially, it seemed that Palm planned to charge more than the $199 (and $299) that AT&T and Apple charge for the iPhone, since Palm’s chief executive Ed Colligan indicated it was a better device, and as such could command a higher price tag. This seemed confirmed by a report a few days ago that the Pre may be $399 on Sprint’s network. But those numbers have been clarified a bit further.

Palm is still finalizing pricing for the Pre, but tentatively is talking about charging either $399 or $499 for Pre without a contract, says Mobile-review (Unwired View breaks it down in English). But with a contract, those numbers are expected to fall to either $149 or $199 — which would put it at or below the iPhone price in the United States (which requires a two-year contract with AT&T).

The report also suggests that Palm may be limited to an initial production run of 200,000 units due to a shortage of displays, but that bulk production will be ready for the holiday shopping season of 2009.

I still have yet to play with a Pre, but if it’s as slick as it looks in the videos, $149 may be a killer deal for the device.

Dangdang Launches Book Preview

Dangdang, one of the biggest online book sellers, just launched an ebook preview channel.

Launch your favorite IE, and go to read.dangdang.com. There’re many books to read. But don’t expect it’s so friendly as Google book search. It’s using jpg format. That means you cannot copy the content. It prepares three font size for you, but you can hardly read the content even with the largest size. That’s why I call it a preview channel.

But anyway this is great stuff. Being able to preview the content is very important for online purchasing research. One less reason to go to the real book store.

I think this is the right thing for an online book store or any web site that’s book related, though there’s still room for improvement, like better supporting of Firefox.

I don’t have much expectation in the new 9taps. I want Douban to improve its book researching features. If I will have to read review in one place, and see preview and buy in another place, I will probably just go directly to the latter, especially there’s review there too.

Claiming the title of “world’s first luxury hybrid,” the Lexus HS 250h is not a hybrid version of another Lexus model, it’s an entirely new car. Although numbers have not yet been finalized, Lexus says it will be the most fuel efficient car in their lineup. They say MPG will be “higher than the Smart microcar,” which is currently rated at 33 city/41 highway. With a decent sized four-cylinder 2.4-liter engine that produces 187 horsepower, that’s an accomplishment.

As for its carbon footprint, the HS uses plant-based eco plastics in upholstery and luggage trim and trunk panels. In total, 30% of the interior and cargo area utilizes eco plastics and 85% of the HS, including the battery, is recyclable.

The luxury features are impressive. Ten-way power seats, moonroof, premium audio, lane departure alert, multifunctional navigation (you can send mapping information to the car from your computer) and Safety Connect (which is Toyota’s version of OnStar).

Lexus slots this new model between the IS and ES, so that will give you a peek into the pricing when this “nearly ready for production” car will be on the street (we’d guess starting in the mid-30s).

365 Ways to Live Cheap!Are you ready?

Today I am reviewing new books written by two colleagues: Trent from The Simple Dollar and Leo from Zen Habits. As you read these reviews, please remember that I am friends with both authors.

Mary Hunt bills herself as America’s favorite cheapskate. In 2005, she published a little volume entitled Everyday Cheapskate’s Greatest Tips, which contained “500 simple strategies for smart living”. Hunt’s book didn’t offer any sort of narrative or broad overview of money — for that you would need to read her other books. Greatest Tips was just a collection of 500 one-paragraph money-saving ideas.

My colleague Trent Hamm from The Simple Dollar has just released his first book, and its approach is similar to Everyday Cheapskate’s Greatest Tips. In 365 Ways to Live Cheap!, Hamm offers a year’s worth of one-paragraph “tactics” for saving money. (Hunt calls them “strategies” and Hamm calls them “tactics” — what they really are is “tips”.) I like Hamm’s tips better than Hunt’s: they generally seem more useful — and certainly more motivational.

If you’re familiar with Hamm’s writing at The Simple Dollar, you know what to expect here: solid, down-to-earth advice with an emphasis on the useful and the practical. Hamm divides the book into 19 chapters offering tips on topics like:

* Appliances
* Banking and investing
* Clutter
* Energy use
* Love and marriage

Unlike Hunt’s book (which is divided into 20 broad categories), Hamm also includes two chapters of general tips for flexing your frugal muscles. Hunt’s tips are much more detailed. She offers tips like how to store paint, how to thicken gravy, and how to clean up soda pop. Hamm’s tips are more general: plan ahead for car replacement, install a programmable thermostat, exercise more frequently. Both books are useful, but I think Hamm’s is more applicable to my own life.

Books like these don’t lend themselves to easy review. They’re not meant to be read from cover-to-cover. Instead, they should be used as resources, as pools of ideas. Looking for ways to save on electronics? Pull out 365 Ways to Live Cheap! for tips like this:

136. Know the features you need before you shop
If you’re about to sink some money into a new electronic item, know what features you actually need before even beginning to shop. List exactly what you’re looking for before you even start looking at research materials. This is much the same psychology as preparing a shopping list before you go to the grocery store. It keeps you focused on exactly what you need instead of being distracted by something else that might come along. Before you even begin to research your purchase, know exactly what you want.

For a book like this to be useful, you have to be able to find the information you want. Fortunately, 365 Ways to Live Cheap! is well-organized. There’s no index, but each section has its own table of contents. As a bonus, Hamm’s book is beautifully designed. And it’s cheap! (Only eight bucks.)

Hamm’s book isn’t for everyone. It’s not trying to be The Tightwad Gazette or Your Money or Your Life. This is a compendium of tips (or “tactics”), and as such, it succeeds admirably.

17-inch unibody MacBook Pro with non-removable battery rumored for Macworld

Our folks in Asia are at it again with some pretty startling news. The 17-inch MacBook Pro is going Unibody, like the 13-inch and 15-inch models. That, in itself isn't really that big of a deal; it was widely expected. The big news is that Apple is making a super slim battery pack for the 17-inch MacBook Pros that will last much longer than current models. However, you won't be able to remove the battery pack. It will be inside the machine, just like iPods and iPhones. How?

Those of us with three year old MacBook Pros can attest that these batteries lose a significant amount of performance over time and need to be replaced. It isn't quite clear how Apple will deal with this issue. They may have new technology that can take more charges, or they may offer a service replacement similar to the replacement of a motherboard or hard drive. Maybe swapping out the battery will be as easy as swapping out RAM.

Obviously, these new 17-inch displays are expected to be revealed at Macworld 2009 and will also likely be outfitted with Apple's high gloss screens. Apple has come under fire from graphics professionals for not offering a matte option to their glossy screen Pro models.

Additionally, the 13-inch Plastic MacBook is widely expected to be phased out which might bring the cost of the Unibody MacBook down closer to the $1000 price point. We can't verify this, however.

9to5Mac is reporting that a unibody, 17-inch MacBook Pro will be announced at Macworld, following in the footsteps of the previously released unibody 13 and 15-inchers. The rumor, backed up by some "whisperers" at Macrumors, isn't really an earth-shattering surprise -- though the accompanying revelation that this model is expected to have a slim, extended-life, non-removable battery is rather eye-opening -- and somewhat disappointing, considering the lameness of non-removable batteries. We'll know for sure on Tuesday at the keynote.

Update: Apple Insider is now independently confirming the imminent arrival of the unibody 17-incher, and also corroborating the fixed internal battery theory.

January 2, 2009 (IDG News Service) The Wikimedia Foundation has raised the necessary funds to operate Wikipedia until the end of June, the nonprofit organization announced Friday.

personal appeal from Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales, posted in December on the web sites of Wikipedia and The Wikimedia Foundation, raked in $2 million from over 50,000 contributors in just eight days. The financial support will allow the foundation to cover its operating costs for the current fiscal year, which ends June 30, 2009.

In his thank you letter, Wales specifies that donations will go towards the foundation’s day-to-day operations, including servers and bandwith and improvements to open source software, as well as the salaries of its small staff of 23 people. Funds will also go towards supporting Wikipedia’s international network of volunteers and outreach events like Wikipedia Academies, in-person workshops that help attendees learn more about how to use and edit Wikpedia. I’m especially excited about Wikimedia producing online video tutorials to help those who can’t attend Wikipedia Academies.

"This campaign has proven that Wikipedia matters to its users, and that our users strongly support our mission: to bring free knowledge to the planet," Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales said in a statement.

A personal appeal from Wales -- Wikimedia's chairman emeritus -- posted on the organization's Web site on Dec. 23 triggered a boost in donations: More than 50,000 contributions totaling $2 million were made in the next eight days.

Wikimedia's goal was to raise $6 million to fund its operations through the end of its fiscal year on June 30 of this year.

If advertisements were plastered all over the site, people would likely feel the need not to donate, and Wikipedia would feel too corporate, like MySpace or YouTube — an identity at odds with its free culture ethos. Wales has blogged about his belief that advertising is not right for Wikpedia, preferring that donations come directly from supporters who have a stake in the community.

The Long Tail Theory is wrong?

Research has been cropping up in the last few years to challenge Chris Anderson's modern-classic theory of demand distribution. The Times of London had this to report today in their article - Long Tail Theory Contradicted:

The internet was supposed to bring vast choice for customers, access to obscure and forgotten products - and a fortune for sellers who focused on niche markets. But a study of digital music sales has posed the first big challenge to this “long tail” theory: more than 10 million of the 13 million tracks available on the internet failed to find a single buyer last year.

Personally, I don't think this is terribly shocking. The "Long Tail" demand theory has been questioned again and again in application to sales of popular culture related goods (hmm... I wonder why they call it "popular" culture). However, there's one arena where the Long Tail plays out almost perfectly - search queries. Evidence?

How about Udi Manber, Google's VP of Engineering, noting that:

20 to 25% of the queries we see today, we have never seen before

Or Google themselves explaining that:

so-called "long tail advertisers" make up half our revenue.

Or Dustin Woodard's investigation into the distribution of search query demand:

It turns out that, at least in this particular three-month data set, the top 100 terms accounted for just 5.7 percent of all search traffic. Expand to the top 500, 1000, and 10000 terms, and just 8.9 percent, 10.6 percent, and 18.5 percent of all search traffic is involved, respectively.

This means if you had a monopoly over the top 1,000 search terms across all search engines (which is impossible), you'd still be missing out on 89.4% of all search traffic. There's so much traffic in the tail it is hard to even comprehend. To illustrate, if search were represented by a tiny lizard with a one-inch head, the tail of that lizard would stretch for 221 miles.

At SEOmoz, nearly every large client we work for has exactly the same type of traffic graph - I've even shown off SEOmoz.org's own via Enquisite. The long tail is regularly producing 50-75%+ of the search traffic to large sites. Don't be fooled by news that the "Long Tail" might not exist - it's just that it might not be as big or as valuable, particularly in "pop culture" niches like movies & music.

Chinese workers leaving cities in droves

CHENGDU, China (Reuters) -- China's ocean of blue-collar workers is streaming back to the country's farming hinterland, bringing thwarted aspirations and rising discontent in tow as their city jobs, their paths out of poverty, fall victim to the global economic crisis.

Train K192 is a daily conduit of the reversing flow.

Every afternoon it pulls into Chengdu, capital of populous Sichuan province, after a 31-hour trip from Guangzhou, centre of China's once-thriving export heartland.

Hundreds of weary passengers, some of whom stand through the entire journey because seats are sold out, straggle into the grey light of the Chengdu winter and an uncertain future.

"Lots of factories have closed. Mine shut about three months ago. There was nothing to do, so I came home," said Wu Hao, 21, sporting a stylish striped sweater and a sleek metal suitcase.

After a year spent making circuit boards in Guangzhou, he was heading back to his family's patch of farmland, a full month before the Chinese new year when he would usually visit home.

Officials estimate that more than 10 million migrant laborers have already returned to the countryside as thousands of companies have been dragged under by weak global demand for everything from clothes to cars.

The government, always concerned about social instability, is now on high alert, fearful of the consequences of a huge mass of jobless, disappointed, rootless young men.

Beijing has urged firms to avoid cutting jobs despite falling profits, and many bosses have obliged by retaining workers but giving them unpaid leave.

"Sales were really bad and the boss just kept giving us holidays. We had 15 days off last month," said Tan Jun, who also clambered off train K192 in Chengdu. "Next year I won't go back."

With an impish smile, Tan looked more like a student than the factory hand he had been for a drug company in Dongguan, an industrial city next to Guangzhou.

"Menace to Stability"

Over the past three decades, about 130 million people have left China's countryside for the smokestacks, assembly lines and construction sites of cities.

That migration, described as the world's biggest ever by the United Nations, has underpinned the country's heady growth and also given its poorest citizens a share of the spoils, as urban residents' incomes are much higher than farmers'.

Known as China's "floating population", laborers rarely settle permanently where they work -- effectively prohibited from doing so by residency rules -- and return in droves to their hometowns for the Chinese lunar new year.

State media have put the best possible gloss on the in-bound tide of migrants under way: they are simply returning home early, one month ahead of the Year of the Ox which begins on Jan. 26.

But China is heading into uncharted territory and the picture could deteriorate quickly. Many economists forecast growth next year of less than 7.5 percent, the country's lowest since 1990 and a level that would swell the ranks of the jobless.

"The redistribution of wealth through theft and robbery could dramatically increase and menaces to social stability will grow," Zhou Tianyong, a leading Communist Party scholar, wrote this month in a newspaper issued by a state think-tank.

Workers and officials alike hope the migration reversal is only temporary, but the numbers are too vast to ignore. The social security ministry says 10 percent of all migrants have already gone back to the countryside.

New economy?

China, in the short term at least, is pinning its hopes on a smooth absorption of the returnees.

"We expect that there will be a big change early next year, probably in March or April," said Wang Min, a director at the Yuhui Labour Market in Chengdu. "A lot of people will stay here in Sichuan to look for work and not go to other provinces."

If so, they could be redrawing China's economic map.

Coastal provinces have long been the wealthiest in China and the main destination for migrants. But they have borne the brunt of falling exports, while the country's poorer hinterland is more closely tied to domestic fortunes that could rise on the back of a hefty government stimulus spending.

"We are seeing quite a few good, talented people come our way from Guangdong, people with business experience and skills," said Wei Chengyi, manager at Chengdu Doulton Trading Co., which sells ceramic filters. "It's a big help for us."

Unveiling its rural policy priorities for next year, the government said on Sunday that it will encourage unemployed people who return home to start their own businesses. Officials in Chongqing and Henan, two big sources of migrants, have already pledged to lend seed money.

Reconstruction after the devastating earthquake cent red on Sichuan this year has also created a huge need for labor that will sop up some of the floating population.

"I'm not worried. There are still places you can find a job. And when you've got a lot of friends, it's quite easy," said Long Zhaojun, who had spent nearly four years in coastal factories.

Just off the train in Chengdu, Long said he would stay in the bustling city of 10 million for a while to hunt for jobs and have some fun. He was in no rush to return to his farming village.

Job seekers flood IT staffing site

About 20,000 people looking for jobs signed on to oDesk Corp.'s online staffing marketplace in November, the largest monthly increase -- by at least 40% -- that CEO Gary Swart has seen since joining the firm in 2005. Swart said he expects another 15,000 people to sign up this month.

About 4,600 contract jobs are listed on the oDesk site, about twice the number available a year ago. The growth in available jobs is a sign that contract work, like outsourcing, is countercyclical -- it tends to expand when the economy is troubled.

"Companies are trying to do more with less," Swart said.

In all, some 157,000 people are currently seeking work on the site.

Meanwhile, the National Association of Computer Consultant Businesses reported earlier this month that overall IT employment in the United States declined by almost 34,000 jobs between October and November. U.S. IT employment for the month stood at about 3.87 million.

Robert Scheier, a managing director for sourcing advisory services at PricewaterhouseCoopers International, said that the use of contractors is growing as companies look to cut IT costs.

Workers listed on the oDesk site are located around the world, and the hourly rates offered reflect the economic differences among countries -- averaging $12.52 in India, $6.33 in the Philippines, $16.86 in Russia, and $18.32 in the United States.

Ask the Readers: When Does It Make Sense to Refinance a Mortgage?

So much for vacation. I just can’t keep myself away from you guys!

While surfing around this evening, I found a story at USA Today about how mortgages are at a 37-year low. A 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averages about 5.28% right now.

I don’t usually pay much attention to these stories. We refinanced our first house (from a 9% 30-year loan to a 5.75% 15-year loan), but our current mortgage is in a kind of phantom zone: We have a $207,000 balance at 6.25%, with about 25 years remaining. We think our home is worth about $350,000 ($333,500 according to Zillow), even after the wild swings in housing prices over the past few years.

The USA Today article piqued my curiosity, so I jumped over to Bankrate to see what sorts of loans were available. The site gave me three options:

The best option would give us a 5.00% rate and a monthly payment of $1111. (Our current monthly payment — principal and interest only — is $1386.60.) We could conceivably save $275 per month by re-financing.

But then I noticed an ad for a company called AmeriSave. It touted rates as low as 4.25%. A 4.25% 30-year mortgage? My jaw dropped. Literally. Could this be real? I clicked over, filled out the initial form, and took a gander at the rates they offered:

A payment of $1018 per month? That’s $378 less than we’re paying now! Yes, I do see the $6634 in fees and points. Yes, I understand that it will take us 18 months to recover these costs. That’s fine. We still plan to live in this house forever (or until we can afford to relocate to Wells, England).

As a reminder, Kris and I have a mortgage prepayment plan in place. For the past year, we’ve paid $2000 every month, knocking off a a few hundred dollars in principal each time. We would continue to pay $2000 every month even with a new loan, so we’re looking for a low interest rate and low fees.

So, my book proposal is on hold for a day. I’m spending my Friday digging into mortgages. I have several tasks on my agenda:

I’m going to call AmeriSave to find out more about their rates.
I’m going to call my current mortgage company to see what sort of rate they can offer.
I’ll go through the process at Lending Tree.
I’ve e-mailed my mortgage broker to see what he can do for me. (And he replied almost immediately — at 10pm on a Thursday!)

It seems strange to be devoting a day to this when it hadn’t even been on my radar until an hour ago. But it’s moves like this that can save big bucks in the long run. In All Your Worth, Elizabeth Warren encourages readers to “count the dollars, not the pennies”. When you make smart choices on the big expenses, you have more freedom to spend what you want on the small expenses. By refinancing, I’m trying to count the dollars. (When we refinanced our first house, we were able to keep the same payment, but cut the term from 26 years to 15 years.)

Meanwhile, Jason B. wrote in yesterday with a story about his efforts to refinance in this crazy market:

I’m refinancing my mortgage from 6.375% to something lower. I originally locked in my rate at 5.25% just in case it went higher. But the rate dropped to 5.0%.

I realized my $300 application fee was less than what I’d save in just 9 months of interest at the lower rate, so I called up and they agreed to keep my application open, charge an extra application fee (instead of starting over with all the paperwork) and lower my rate. But now the rate has dropped to 4.875% and could go even lower! I guess I’ll just keep paying the $300 until the rate still drops. But it feels wasteful.

The iPhone is going to dominate the Web 2.0 world

The iPhone is probably the coolest and the most useful gadget I have ever owned. I have been playing around with the iPhone for several months now and mark my words when I say this, “by the end of 2009, everyone will have ditched their existing phones and convert to the iPhone”. Yeah, so that means you too, dear reader!

I initially wanted to get an HTC phone, but after comparing the price and functionalities between these two “touch-technology” gadgets, I came to the conclusion that the iPhone is the better choice. And I was right. It’s wayyyyyy better.

Why iPhone? Well first of all, we all already know how cool the iPhone’s multi-touch technology works. The ability to enlarge pictures by stretching apart your two fingers on the screen, moving things around here and there, zooming in and out, flipping pages and stuffs, all by using the gestures of your fingers on the screen… plus the iPhone’s ability of knowing whether you’re holding the phone vertically or horizontally… these things has never failed to awe anyone who’s new to it. It is just unbelievably advanced and “intelligent” - and soooo cool…. again - that you’ll feel like you got hold of a device from the future. That’s right folks, The Future is Now.

Okay, enough of the sales talk. Three reasons why the iPhone is going to dominate the Web 2.0 world:

1. Browsing websites in the iPhone is exactly the same as like browsing websites on your PC/laptop

Yes! Thanks to the multi-touch technology, the Safari browser inside the iPhone will render webpages just as it normally would in a normal computer! No more impractical WAP-based pages and phones - they are so dead. I hate seeing broken pages and minimalist sites on a slow GPRS connection anyway. The iPhone connects to the Internet via WiFi (now even 3G!), so iPhone users can actually sit at Starbucks and browse the Internet without even needing to carry that heavy laptop. And remember, it renders the actual page! AJAX, Javascript, all will be working correctly. So that means Web 2.0 apps are going to be used for a long, long time ahead!

2. Affordable price

Priced at only USD199 for the new Version 2 iPhone, anyone can afford one these days. I am pretty convinced that the iPhone is going to be the next Windows PC of this era. Everyone is going to get themselves an iPhone, and once everyone starts using it, more and more web apps will be exposed to those people who previously was never really Internet-savvy users before.

3. iPhone apps can be developed

Lots and lots of ever-increasing number of apps can be freely downloaded from the net and installed in the iPhone. If you’re a Web 2.0 developer, it doesn’t hurt to build an iPhone app for your web app as well. More and more iPhone apps are being developed as we speak. The iPhone apps will help boost the functionalities and practicalities of your web app. Take it to your full advantage!

Will Facebook’s Business Model Work?

Shel Israel argues that Facebook’s revenue ideas have gone from awful to worse. He has compared Facebook to “an old college romance. It was torrid at first and I thought it was true love. But then there came a series of unpleasant surprises in her behavior. One morning I woke up and discovered she who had been so lovely so recently had become downright ugly to me.” While I’m not sure about Shel’s analogy I have begun to wonder how Facebook is going to grow their revenue.

Currently, Facebook’s model appears to be perfect the “social graph” first and build a revenue stream later. Facebook is estimated to be bringing in $150 million in revenue and is sitting on a significant amount of cash. I have to wonder if Facebook’s future revenue models will be successful or if they will fail horribly. While people have utilized Facebook polls and have tested out Facebook SocialAds, their advertising system has not gone mainstream. So what will be Facebook’s primary revenue source?

It appears that SocialAds is Facebook’s primary monetization tool. While people have complained of Facebook’s horrendous click-thru rate, those clicks are by highly targeted individuals. One person that I spoke with at the Web Community Forum in Seattle said that they were having great success. While the click-thru rates were extremely low, their conversion rate was extremely high (above 60 percent). If that’s the case, SocialAds may be a success.

Conversely, Facebook’s attempt to derive revenue from their new Pages offering is a poor one. As a business, why would I opt to rely completely on SocialAds and newsfeed items to drive users to my brand’s page? What happened to user invites that the free groups already offer? I definitely think Facebook should rethink their Pages offering. Unfortunately, I don’t have statistics as to the performance of Pages but I would assume that the Facebook Pages have not been as widely adopted as Facebook Groups. Am I off base here?

Can Facebook generate billions of dollars in revenue? Perhaps. At this point any equation that I provide which justifies $1 billion a year in revenue would be totally inaccurate as it is limited to speculation. While I think that Facebook’s revenue model will be successful at generating a significant amount of revenue for the company, I’m doubtful that it will live up to the hype generated by Facebook’s $15 billion valuation. American Household Debt Declines

This morning, Karl sent me a link to a CNN/Money article that is simultaneously happy and sad:

In a sign that Americans’ spending habits are shifting, household debt fell for the first time ever, based on data going back to 1952. According to a Federal Reserve report released Thursday, consumer debt fell an annualized $30 billion, or 0.8% in the third quarter to $13.91 trillion.

Think about that for a moment. In the 56 years that records have been kept, household debt has never declined in this country. Even now, there’s evidence that the current drop may not be due to consumer choice. USA Today writes:

The decline in household debt levels is evidence of the severe credit squeeze that is occurring as banks, saddled by billions of dollars of losses in mortgage debt, have tightened lending standards and made it harder for people to get loans.

In other words, it’s not the borrowers who are cutting back, but the lenders.

Internet Explorer might want to watch its back. Google Inc. took its “Chrome” Web browser out of beta this week, 100 days or so after first revealing it to the world.

How Baidu can dig its way out

A couple of days ago a journalist acquaintance called and asked me what I thought about the anti-trust and fraud lawsuit that may be filed against Baidu. Her timing was good because I'd spent a large chunk of last Sunday writing a long post about Baidu. If you're wondering why you didn't read it, it's because in moment of dumb tab management I accidentally deleted it rather than post it. It still hurts. It took me a few days to get over my sorrow and take another crack. Here it is again, slightly condensed from its original form, and perhaps better for it.

What I told the journalist is that I don't think the lawsuit is the real problem. Baidu's problem is whether or not its users see its search returns as relevant. Revelance is the oxygen of search engines. Google became popular because it consistently and quickly returned more relevant results to users than other search engines. Baidu held off Google in China because for a long time many Chinese people thought its results were more relevant. It also, of course, has its legally gray but incredibly popular MP3 search, which accounts for a lot of its traffic.

Baidu has had two recent crises that have damaged perceptions of the relevance of its search results. The first is the alleged removal of negative search returns for dairy company Sanlu during that company's own recent crisis. The second, and more recent, is the scandal involving the selling of listings in organic search returns on certain keywords to what turned out to be unlicensed medical companies, which was revealed in a CCTV report.

Internet users and media consumers in China know that the government controls coverage of sensitive stories, both in print and online, and they don't tend to hold media companies (I include Baidu in this category) accountable for that. But if users think a search engine is selling out the quality of its search returns for commercial reasons, they will be less forgiving. Users also have an alternative that they can switch to easily in the form of Google, which is continually improving its product. This vulnerability will become more acute when, sooner or later, the MP3 search business is legislated out of existence or becomes too much of a litigation magnet. Remember, Baidu is NASDAQ listed, and can be punished in ways that many local companies cannot.

Baidu's challenge is now to demonstrate that its search product, which is the foundation of its current business and every other business it wants to build, is still the best one for Chinese users because it gives them the most relevant results. One step that Baidu has reportedly taken is sending a group of tourists on a luxury junket to Hong Kong. While that's in keeping with local PR tradition, it's probably not a long-term solution. More encouragingly, the company has pledged to overhaul (though, as near as I can tell, not necessarily eliminate) its practice of selling inclusion in "organic" search listings.

That's a start. Ultimately, however, Baidu needs to think very hard about its overall business model and the relationship between the advertising it sells and the search results it delivers to users. Search engine results are a signal-to-noise challenge. How much junk do you have to wade through and how many blind alleys do you have to follow before you find what you really want? Google has proven that advertising, if handled correctly, can be as relevant as organic search returns. It has, however, given itself a measure of safety by keeping paid returns clearly separate from organic ones. This makes sense because organic returns are algorithmically generated, while the paid ones are based on keyword bidding. The ads may be relevant, but you can always see just how well the search itself is performing. Also, users are often interested in specifically non-commercial results (like blog postings).

I will go out on a limb and say that it's not necessarily bad for Baidu to sell inclusion in "organic" search returns. I don't even think Baidu necessarily has to disclose when it has done so. But if Baidu is going to sell inclusion in search returns, and especially if it isn't going to transparently flag paid placement, it undertakes a huge extra burden. Google's algorithm decides the relevance of organic search returns in relation to a given keyword or keywords. Only rarely, if ever, does a human element intrude, and ads and paid listings are kept separate. But if Baidu is going to sell unmarked inclusion in organic results then its salespeople have to do the vetting and make sure that their sales don't degrade the signal-to-noise ratio. This introduces a lot of human judgment and fallibility into the process, especially if the incentives are designed to encourage sales over screening for relevance. As for selling the removal of information from organic results, I can't think of any commercial justification. It's a PR disaster and it should never happen again.

Search engine results also confer legitimacy (something that search engine users need to be cautious about, since listings can be gamed on any search engine, if only temporarily). Right or wrong, even though we're innately sceptical of advertising we expect companies or information in the first screen or two of organic listings to be of high quality. We're a little more suspect of listings on the 93rd page of results. As the medical company scandal showed, that legitimacy should be sold only with caution and proper due diligence. After all, if a radio station sells ads that drive listeners away or flog bogus products, it won't stay in business for very long. It's easy to listen to another radio station, and it's easy to switch to another search engine.

So while it might not be necessary to disclose paid listings or, better yet, separate them from organic ones, it is the simplest and most elegant and effective way to defend the quality of Baidu's flagship product in the long term. If Baidu won't do that, then at the very least it has to be completely transparent about how it screens and vets companies for paid inclusion in organic results and it has to be willing to absorb the consequences when, inevitably, that system goes awry. This would be a poor alternative, however.

Personally, I like the idea of a local challenger to Google and I'd like Baidu to succeed. But if Baidu wants to hold off Google and build a business that can prosper in the long run it has to rethink the "search engine with Chinese characteristics" approach. Google isn't sitting still in China, and if Chinese users start doubting the relevance of Baidu's search returns it won't be long before the Internet search market-share figures are reversed and Baidu becomes Accoona, or one more victim of the Google juggernaut.

The things we buy have an absolute value — the price we pay for them — but they also possess relative perceived values. Not everything with the same price holds the same value to me. An $80 pair of work boots might be worth much more to me than an $80 sweater or an $80 meal in a restaurant.

And I can often (not always) derive more value from something cheap than from a more expensive equivalent. My roomates always said you should buy a nike basketball shoes if you really like basketball.However,i never do it.For one thing,i have no the spare money to spend on this expensive shoes.For the other thing,I just think an Anta or Lining shoes which is cheaper than nike is OK for my running and jumping.I would rather spend the extra money to do other siginificant thing.Even sometimes,it is difficult for me to detect a ￥200~300 difference between two or three shoes.

That is what i think,not everything with the same price holds the same value to me.

DivX Stage 6 - Stage6 was the official video sharing site sponsored by the DivX company. In February of 2008 it was announced that Divx was closing Stage6 and instead going to focus all of their efforts on their DivX Connected products. The site is still up, but just with a message saying they are closed down.

DocSyncer - DocSyncer was a tool that allowed you to sync the documents on your hard drive with those in your Google Docs. It also supported versioning, and did all of this for free. Sadly the service never left beta and ceased operating in June of this year. The domain name currently does not resolve.

Eyespot.com - Eyespot was an online editor that allowed video mashup creation. In March of this year they opened up their services to everyone, but on September 30th they sent out a Twitter message saying they had shut down. The domain currently shows their shut down message, complete with a crying version of their logo.

GlobalPandora - On January 14th of this year, GlobalPandora launched, promising people outside of the USA the ability to listen to the popular Pandora music service. A mere five days later the dream came to an end as GlobalPandora shut down. The site is now lists news about music and how to listen to Pandora through other means.

Pownce - In July of 2007, Kevin Rose of Digg unveiled his secret new project, a Twitter-like microblogging platform named Pownce. While the service was in invite-only Beta testing, it was the talk of the town, but after it went public in January 2008, it never quite caught on. Six Apart purchased the site in early December 2008, and promptly announced the site would be shut down on the 15th of the month.

Social.FM - In September of 2007, Mercora renamed themselves Social.FM to promote the social aspects of their music discovery business. While it was a noble try, a little less than a year later, on July 31st, 2008 to be exact, the site shut down after three years of giving it a go. Neither of their domain names currently resolve.

TripHub.com - Founded in June of 2005 TripHub was a site focused on centralizing the information for groups trying to plan trips. In June of 2007 they had gotten as far as getting information shared with Orbitz, but alas the startup shut down in August of this year. The site is now a blog dedicated to travel.

Yesterday, USA Today published a piece describing how you should invest in a bad economy. Though the market is in shambles, the authors write, it’s no time to panic:

Enough. The stock market — and your savings — have gone down steadily, day after day, for more than a year. You’ve lost thousands this month alone. It’s time to do something. But…what? Should you shift more money into stocks? Put it all into a savings account? Pay off your mortgage? Hop a freight and become a hobo?

The authors talked to top financial advisers from around the nation. Here’s a summary of the experts’ advice. (For details, please read the entire article.)

If you’re in your 20s, take comfort in the fact that time is on your side. You probably haven’t lost much, and you have decades to make up the difference. Now’s a good time to focus on paying off your high-interest debt.
If you’re in your 30s, prioritize retirement savings. “Don’t let fear squander your opportunity,” says one expert. Protect yourself from unemployment by maintaining an adequate emergency fund. Be cautious about moving money out of the stock market, but be open to diversifying with new contributions.
If you’re in your 40s, prioritize saving “even if it means cutting back on spending.” Don’t abandon the stock market. One financial planner tells USA Today that “nervous investors who stash all their savings in certificates of deposit and money market funds ‘are committing financial suicide’.” Still, stay diversified, and don’t take unnecessary risks.
If you’re in your 50s, don’t do anything rash. Keep your investments balanced. Continue to save. In fact, the article suggests that you should look for “any way you have to boost your savings, no matter how small.”
If you’re 60 or older, your position is tougher. You don’t have as much time to recover from the market downturn, but you’re not without options. Put off Social Security as long as possible. (This is a strategy advocated by Scott Burns when I interviewed him last summer.) Take a part-time job. Adjust your expectations.

It seems to me that the advice to every age group (except the last one) is essentially the same: Don’t panic. Diversify. Cut spending. Boost savings. Or, in other words, do the things that we’ve been talking about here at Get Rich Slowly for the past 2-1/2 years!

Facebook, Google Vie for Connect Services

One hour after Google did a public launch of Google Friend Connect, Facebook launched Facebook Connect. The simultaneous launch is not a coincidence -- the two competing services are battling for mindshare as they strive to be the frontrunners in data portability.

The companies want users to be able to use their Google and Facebook logins to enter third-party sites. It benefits users and third-party sites and allows Facebook and Google to collect more information about what users are doing online.

There are some key differences between the services. Google's service uses OpenSocial. This means sites using Google Friend Connect can use OpenSocial's open-source applications, such as message boards and ratings gadgets. Google also lets users sign in with their Yahoo!, AOL and MSN usernames.

It's also easier for site owners to use. Google requires adding a few "snippets of code to your site," Stan Schroeder at Mashable reported. However, "adding Facebook Connect apps is a much more convoluted process," he said.

However, Facebook has an advantage in terms of partnering with large third-party services. Facebook Connect is already working with Digg, StumbleUpon and Loopt. Google Friend Connect's partners seem to be smaller sites run by individuals, such as Billboard for the People and Qloud.

It's too early to say how either service will fare, but the Internet is already buzzing with early feedback from site owners.

Loopt, a company with a social-mapping service that lets mobile phone users see whether their friends are in close proximity to them, was one of Facebook Connect's first partners. Evan Tana, the Director of Product Management & Marketing of Loopt, is optimistic about the service.

"Working with Facebook Connect widens the circle of friends Loopt users can interact with, combining the power of Loopt's social-mapping service with an established network of Facebook friends," he said in a press release. "Loopt users will be able to receive an alert whenever Facebook friends are nearby, discover restaurants and bars recommended by their Facebook friends, and integrate their location into their Facebook feed," he added.

Google Friend Connect has also garnered some positive feedback.

Hyperact Design Group is using Google Friend Connect to attract more users to one of its sites - Billboard for the People. The group is trying to raise US$25,000 to create a large billboard in Manhattan to congratulate President-elect Barack Obama.

Danny Peraza, one of the creative directors of Hyperact Design Group, told The Industry Standard that more than 1,000 users signed up for the site through Friend Connect within a few days. He added that hundreds of users have invited their friends to visit Billboard for the People through Google Friend Connect, and that the service has also enabled users to easily add comments to the site.

"There are a few other things I'd like to see," he said. "Like now we've got all these users, and I'd like to have a way to message them, and have a way for them to message each other."

Orli Yakuel, who uses Google Friend Connect on her site GO2WEB20.net would also like to see messaging.

"I think this is a must have feature and needless to say, it's the real way to communicate with someone," she wrote on her blog.

Peraza is hopeful that those additions will come soon. Meanwhile he is happy with what he has.

"It's a step in a right direction," he said. "It means we don't have to set up an online group elsewhere."

I hate exam

The end of this term is coming.That means i have to spend more time on my teaching book for more time and less time to surf the internet and study e-commerce and e-marketing.

I don't think the exam is useful for us. It is just a form.because no matter who,you can get a very good mark if you spend your last month on reciting something..Basically,your memory and your fighting in the last month before exam.You will be winner.

For me,i would like to spend my time on my Internet or E-commerce learning.I don't think what we learn from university is significant.

However,i just can face the true.the CET6 and final exam is coming. i have no choice but to face it.

Nokia Tuesday released its high-end N97 3G smartphone, combining a touchscreen with a tilted 3.5-inch display, a full QWERTY keyboard, and inviting a straight-up comparison with Apple's trend-setting iPhone. (See the Nokia 97 up close.)

The handheld combines advanced hardware features with a bundle of services, including assisted GPS, which are intended to merge the device tightly with location-based applications, social networks and the mobile Web. The company also unveiled an improved Nokia Maps service and a new Nokia Messaging service, both part of its Ovi online services set.

Some of the drawbacks: early consensus is that the N97's touch interface is not quite up to fluidity of the iPhone standard; it's pricey (nearly $700 without a carrier subsidy); and won't be available in the United States until sometime after mid-2009.

Besides the iPhone, rivals include Research in Motion's just-introduced BlackBerry Storm, and two Windows Mobile smartphones, the Sony Ericsson X1 and the HTC Touch Pro.

N97 users can create a customized home screen with the widgets of their preferred Web services and social-networking sites. The Nokia Web browser, unlike Apple's Safari browser on the iPhone, supports Flash and Flash video. The combination of the touchscreen and a full slide-away QWERTY keyboard (the iPhone uses a virtual keyboard) is intended to unite an intuitive touch interface with the thumb-driven keyboard for heavy duty texting and e-mail.

Online video is available, including this one from Engadet.com, at Nokia World 08, the annual conference this week in Barcelona, Spain.

Promoted as a "mobile computer," the N97 supports up to 48GB of storage, including 32GB of onboard memory, expandable with a 16GB microSD card for music and other media. It runs on the latest version of Nokia's S60 Symbian operating system.

It supports a range of WCDMA and EGSM cellular frequencies and HSDPA for 3G wireless. It has a 802.11bg adapter and Bluetooth 2.0 and enhanced data rates. It supports a Micro-USB connector and Hi-Speed USB 2.0. In addition, there is a built-in GPS receiver with support for assisted GPS services.

Nokia is opening widget development to third-party programmers. For now, users will have to make use of the existing Symbian application, called Downloads. Nokia hinted it will release an improved download service, akin to Apple's popular App Store in 2009.

Two new Nokia services, Maps and Messaging, were unveiled for the company's Ovi online services platform for mobile users, though it also supports PCs. Finnish for "door," Ovi is part of Nokia's self-proclaimed shift to become an Internet services company. Announced in late August 2007, Ovi initially offered the Nokia Music Store, Nokia Maps and N-Gage, for games.

The new version of Nokia Maps, for mobile mapping and navigation, lets users pre-plan a route on their PC, then synchronize it with their mobile device. The service also supports high-resolution aerial images, 3D landmarks for 216 cities, and terrain maps. There's also a new route overview feature. The company says future upgrades will integrate Nokia Maps with other personal content, enabling users to combine location-associated media and content with trips or visits, and share the results with others.

Nokia Messaging brings together consumer push e-mail and instant messaging for Nokia devices, allowing users to access an array of online mail and messaging services, such as Gmail, as well as those offered by ISPs. Part of the release is a new Web portal for Mail on Ovi, which lets PC users create and access Ovi e-mail accounts and other Ovi services with a single sign-on account.

Mail on Ovi also offers users Web access to e-mail and up to 1GB of storage space, and spam filters. The beta version of Mail on Ovi will be available this month, with a launch planned for February. The broader Nokia Messaging service will launch during the first quarter of 2009 overseas, for Nokia S60-based devices. A U.S. rollout date was not named. Support for IM and for Nokia Series 40 devices will arrive in the second half of 2009. The company says it plans to sign deals with mobile operators to set up Nokia Messaging as an operator-supported service, available as part of a subscriber's data plan.
